Celebrated for his diverse and prolific contemporary practice, Al Stark’s oeuvre spans installation, public art, sculpture, printmaking and painting. His work forms a personal ‘theatre’ that explores gender, politics, religion, nature and recently, the collective anxiety of ecocide and late stage capitalism.
On stepping into one of Pentridge’s divisions, Stark experienced a sensory overload, “It’s unforgettable and unforgiving.
The smell, the omni-presence, the weight of history, thousands of bluestones, unimaginable suffering and isolation.” Stark knew not to take this place for granted but to tread lightly and pay attention.
Having lived and worked in Coburg for the past 20 years, Stark’s work has had a unique and distinct presence within the local visual landscape. His work throughout Brunswick and Coburg inspires wonder and contemplation.
